For a little R&R and Romance... try this 'River Run' Retreat

With the gentle rocking of the waves, you'll be lulled to sleep while snuggling under eiderdown in The Waterlily's cozy sleeping loft.

Exquisitely crafted fir and mahogany warm the floating home's interior, while a fireplace, small kitchen unit and scenic river outlook complete the setting for a perfect romantic getaway.

For those who prefer to sleep on solid ground, River Run Cottages offers three other equally inviting accommodations, perched just above the water's edge, two of which are located in the original 'farmer's cottage.' River rock and slate encompass the Northwest room's two-headed shower stall, while an enticing double Jacuzzi in the Keeper's Quarters is made with romance in mind. Whether these rooms are booked out separately, or reserved by one party, the outcome is the same - fabulous features for four fortunate farmers! Both suites warm their guests with crackling fires and comfy beds, and offer city-light views amidst tranquil river surroundings.

We had the pleasure of enjoying The Netloft during our stay. It's hard to imagine that before the transition into a great uscape, this unit was once used by fisherman to dry and repair their nets. Stepping through French doors, we were welcomed by terra cotta tiles and rich Navaho fabrics, effectively creating a New Mexican feel. Antiques and hand-made driftwood furnishings add special touches to the spacious living area, and a well-stocked mini-kitchen permits snack preparation. A decanter of sherry and decadent home-made brownies were treats we later shared while challenging each other to a game of crib (on the giant-size crib board) in front of the blazing wood-stove fire. The Japanese soaking tub on our private deck was also a great way to unwind before heading up a staircase spiraling to our cozy captain bed quarters where we could see Vancouver's lights in the distance.

Jan and Bill, Deb and Terry are partnership couples who have created this great uscape. Although they reside on the property in their individual floating homes, they have the talented knack of pampering without pestering. With the help of part-time cuisine creators, Sue and Karen, the breakfasts are also an important part of this unforgettable experience. Menu choices filled out the night before provide personal preferences and the selections are served in the privacy of your room, on your deck, or delivered to you in bed! Our choice of exquisite cranberry and white chocolate scones were divinely complimented by a fresh fruit bowl of kiwi, papaya, and pineapple. Brent ordered his traditional scrambled eggs to follow, while I chose the daily creation, Eggs Benedict. Both were out of this world.

After breakfast, we decided it was time to treat the ducks as well. By the door of each cottage, is a container of cracked corn to spoil the waterfowl with. By taking it down to the dock, you will have the ducks eating right from your hand. Don't forget the resident cats and dog - they may also come around for a bit of pampering.

To help burn those benedict calories, there are complimentary bikes to cruise the surrounding flat farmlands and river dike, or kayaks to explore great paddling places. The Reifel bird sanctuary is also close by and home to over 250 species of our fine feathered friends. Although biking is not permitted, miles of trails offer a variety of walks.

Situated in the quaint fishing village of Ladner B.C., it's hard to believe that this tranquil uscape is a short thirty minute drive from the bustling city centre of Vancouver. So close to the hub of activity and yet located on the peaceful shores of the mighty Fraser - a definite romantic 'River Run' retreat.
